San Francisco Unit Report
By Mark Thoma
The San Francisco unit is winding up its year of networking and CEU events with our November 14 panel presentation: “California’s Criminal Justice Realignment and San Francisco County’s Response” on Thursday, November 14, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at the Community Assessment and Services Center (CASC) located at 564 6th St. in San Francisco (between Bryant and Brannan streets). On October 1, 2011, Assembly Bill (AB) 109 transferred responsibility for all nonviolent, nonserious and nonsex offenders to the county level. This was one of the most sweeping criminal justice reforms in California’s history and developed due to an overreliance on state prisons that was causing overcrowding. Counties were provided broad discretion and funding to serve this population locally. 1.50 CEUs, no fee but RSVP required to Mark Thoma: thomamsw@gmail.com. We need you! The San Francisco unit is looking for volunteers to help plan and facilitate our 2014 events. Contact Mark Thoma for more information.
