We are less than a month away from the completion of one of the most disconcerting U.S. presidential campaigns in recent history. And as November 8th approaches, the choice becomes more and more clear.
As social workers, we may not agree with Secretary Clinton’s relationship with Wall Street or big business; we may feel disillusioned by the controversy of the Democratic Party in it’s alleged attempts to assure her nomination; but as social workers it is difficult to deny the steadfast, constant and unyielding work she has done on behalf of many of our clients: children, families, women, immigrants and more.
Like many of you, I have followed this campaign with interest, intrigue and hope. I held out hope that Mr. Trump would settle into his role as candidate for the highest office in this country with grace, dignity and class. Clearly I was reaching for the moon with that hope.
It is understood that as social workers we may not always agree with endorsements or the political positions of the NASW. However, we as professional social workers can agree with and must abide by the values and ethics of our profession.
Withholding your vote from someone who reflects the values of Social Work — service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity and competence— puts our country, our communities and our clients at great risk.
In the next few weeks I urge you to consider carefully the future implications of your vote and encourage you to discuss with colleagues, family members, friends and clients why the NASW has endorsed Secretary Hillary Clinton for President.
