How did you become interested in pursuing social work?
I chose social work after learning there was a profession dedicated to a second chance and mercy. For someone like myself there is no other pursuit. Although, I considered many other professional pursuits along the way—first responder, lawyer, FBI agent and pastor—nothing lasted. I was all over the place growing up. Somehow, I recognized a theme and realized I was born to serve those in need. I doubt I thought twice if social work aligned with my Christian beliefs before I turned my life energy to social work. My pursuit of social work is guided by my experiences and faith. No other profession allows me to pay forward the generosity I received as a kid or spiritual guidance I finally understood as an adult.
What area of social work are you most interested in? Why?
My passion has always been in fair housing with a special focus on family homelessness. I appreciate this forum to raise awareness of silent children calling a car home and the parents in pain praying for a break. I know we can do better than this and I am dedicated to doing more than I have. Currently, I work with Riverside County Behavioral Health brokering community linkages for adults in Hemet, and decreasing mental health suffering for children in Corona. Few things make me smile more than knowing I spend each day giving what I have.
What made you decide to become an NASW member?
The professors at Azusa Pacific University consistently remind me that I am joining a profession as a social worker and that NASW marks the professional foundation of social work. But for the professional standards set by NASW, the social work profession becomes weakened without direction and vulnerable to inconsistent standards. I joined NASW in support of a strong social work profession and uniting forces with like-minded professionals.
What are your interests outside of social work?
I am a California kid at heart and love running into the Pacific when it’s hot and warming up on the sand. I tend to choose outdoor social activities like camping, hiking and baseball. When I need that alone time, I go fishing or for a run. My latest interest is international travel and I have a trip planned to Europe in May.
What advice would you give to future social work students?
Don’t commit to one field of interest right away. Allow social work to open up to you and explore your options. As a social worker, you’re only limited to what you don’t know so appreciate that our profession has few limits and take advantage. You will second guess yourself in this profession. I believe any hesitation to sacrifice is your mind aligning with your heart.
