NASW California Chapter is excited to announce our new Director of Advocacy, Policy, and Legislation, Alex Hilke (he/him)! Please join us in giving Alex a warm welcome as we share a little bit more about him with you.
Alex is the son of a NASW-CA member with twenty years of experience in California politics. He previously served on former Assembly Majority Leader Alberto Torrico’s political staff as an intern then as an organizer, on Vice President Kamala Harris’ 2016 United States Senate Campaign winning over East Bay party delegates for her Democratic Endorsement at the state convention, and as the Voter File Data Manager at the California Democratic Party during the 2018 Midterms. He was called to public service by the social worker values his dad instilled in him growing up. Alex believes every societal problem can be solved with systematic change and that it is role of the government to meet the people’s Hierarchy of Needs.
Alex graduated from Sacramento State with a Bachelor’s degree in Government. In 2022, he earned his Master’s in Public Administration with both professional and scholastic honors, despite being born with Cerebral Palsy and overcoming being told by doctors he’d never be able to walk or talk when he was two.
When Alex isn’t making California a better place for social workers and its people, he is usually delving into the lore and mythology of comic book characters, Star Wars, and Star Trek. He also enjoys wine tasting, eating at local restaurants, and going to see the latest summer blockbuster.
Alex is thrilled to bring his skills to NASW-CA. He hopes to make licensure more convenient for social workers throughout the state, to improve public health and emergency services for Californians, to generally improve the standard of living for every Californian, and to create conditions so that everyone can become their best self.
