NASW-CA is proud to offer a Mindfulness and Wellness series, exclusively for Association members. Learn By Doing (LBD) is a monthly, thematic, experiential learning workshop for social workers and social work students to learn and practice mindfulness in community with each other. These sessions will expand beyond NASW’s monthly, one-hour mindfulness practice sessions, delving into special topics facing our clients, communities, and selves each month, and equipping attendees with skills and tools to enhance their individual mindfulness practice and apply to their practice with clients, colleagues, and communities they serve.
.5 CEU will be offered for each session attended, upon completion of a sign in and sign out/evaluation.
On December 20, 2023, join us for Learn By Doing: “Sitting With Suicide: Mindfulness and Modern Approaches to Suicide Treatment’” In this Learn By Doing Session, participants will:
- Understand the core principles of mindfulness and how they can be applied in modern treatment of suicide
- Learn the evidence-based practices for treating suicide
- Familiarization with the common myths and misperceptions of suicide
- Be able to incorporate cultural sensitivity and ethical principles into treatment of suicidality, and how to use a strengths-based approach to client’s experience of suicidal ideation/behaviors

About the Presenter
Brian Stefan (ASW) is a psychotherapist and proud social worker specializing in grief, suicide, romance fraud & financial exploitation, and crisis response. He works with several organizations including Didi Hirsch Suicide Prevention Center and the Los Angeles Mayor’s Office Crisis Response Team/Suicide Response Team. He is an adjunct faculty member at California State University Los Angeles, School of Social Work. Brian is the co-founder and facilitator of InsightLA’s weekly virtual mindfulness group: Deep Suffering H.O.P.E. Affinity & Practice Group (Healing Ourselves through the Present Experience). Along with Dr. Jamie Gamboa, he launched Spotlight on Suicide in 2021 with the mission of educating the general public about suicidal ideation and providing a space for people to listen, learn, and practice how to “Sit With Suicide” within themselves and for others.
CEU Provider Statement: Course meets the qualifications for .5 hours of continuing education credit for MFTs, LPCCs, LEPs and/or LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences, provided by NASW-CA.
