In honor of Social Work Month, the Inland Empire Unit is honored to host a panel discussion that will feature two speakers: Dr. Dretona T. Maddox, DSW BSN, RN-PHN, LCSW and  Theresa Fortune, Maternal Mental Health Activist. Dr. Maddox will present on “Strengthening Care for Black Adolescent Mothers: Evidence, Advocacy, and Empowerment.” Theresa Fortune will present on Maternal Mental Health, sharing her personal journey through the screening of her documentary film, “From the Ashes.” During the panel discussion, she will highlight the importance of the social work role and hopes to encourage cultural humility while creating a more profound sense of how to frame cultural competence.

Learning objectives:

  • Comprehensive Insights into Black Adolescent Maternity: Enhance social workers’ knowledge base with a thorough understanding of the distinct challenges and resilience factors inherent to Black adolescent mothers.
  • Tailored Communication & Advocacy Mastery: Advance social workers’ proficiency in specialized communication and advocacy approaches that are effectively customized for the needs of Black adolescent mothers.
  • Culturally Attuned Evidence-Based Approaches: Promote the adoption of evidence-based practices that are harmonized with cultural awareness, aiming to elevate the standard of social work practice in diverse settings.

Fees (NASW members are required to include their Membership number during registration. NASW-CA will verify your membership after registration):

  • BSW, MSW Student: $10

About the Presenters:

Dr. Maddox is an Assistant Professor of Social Work at California Baptist University. She is also the Founder and Executive Director of Purposely Chosen, Inc./Born for Nia Maternity Homes. Dr. Maddox has a robust background as a Public Health Nurse, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Doctor of Social Work and an entrepreneur with several businesses. She also is a public speaker with multiple engagements across the country.

Theresa Fortune is an interdisciplinary Artist & Maternal Mental Health Activist. The focal point of her work is through art and creative expression, and she boldly shares her personal experiences with economic challenges, social injustices, and postpartum depression. As a community service leader, she is also involved with a dinner theatre show tour and a mentorship and summer camp program with children.


CEU Provider Statement
: Course meets the qualifications for 1.5 hours of continuing education credit for MFTs, LPCCs, LEPs and/or LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences, provided by NASW-CA. 

NASW-CA Refund Policy: To receive a refund, requests must be emailed to naswca@socialworkers.org at least one (1) week prior to the event date. No refunds granted after the event, no exceptions. This policy also applies to group registrants. The refund for group registrations will go directly to the original payer of the registration fee. Refunds may take up to 10 days to process. If attendees pay with a credit card, the refund will be made to the same card. If attendees pay with a check, the refund will be made by check to the person or organization that originally paid for the registration.
