General Information
The Healing Children through Creativity: Art Therapy Training Workshops introduce counselors, educators, mental health and medical professionals to the basic principles and practice of art therapy with emotionally, behaviorally, developmentally and medically challenged children and adolescents. These two-day workshops blend theories and experiential exercises offering a thorough introduction in the therapeutic use of visual art as a powerful treatment modality.
Artistic ability is not necessary to participate fully in this workshop.
Portland State University is an approved provider of CEUs and graduate credit by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC).
Workshop Goals
- Introduction to the field of art therapy.
- Explain the underlying principles of art therapy.
- Experience art materials through art therapeutic processes.
- Demonstrate how to ethically use visual art expression within the context of school counseling and psychotherapy.
- Experience non-directive and directive evaluation and treatment approaches.
- Review forensic art therapy evaluation techniques for suspected child sexual abuse.
- Review six case studies of clients and their art therapeutic course of treatment.
- Demonstrate the use of metaphor and healing stories in art therapy.
- Present creative interventions to improve the client’s self-esteem, increase insight, decrease trauma and acting-out behaviors.
- Review the importance of object relations, art making and expression.
- Understand issues involving the interpretation of children’s art.

Workshop Presenter:
Catherine Rogers Jonsson is a registered board certified art therapist (ATR-BC) with the American Art Therapy Credentials Board and a credentialed professional international member of the American Art Therapy Association. She is a graduate of Columbia University in NYC (School of the Arts, MFA: Visual Art) and the University of Wisconsin-Superior (MA: Art Therapy).
Catherine has 24 years of clinical art therapy experience and offers a mixture of creativity, humor, dynamic teaching and compassionate insights to her workshops. She is an adjunct lecturer with Portland State University.
