Senior citizens commit suicide at a higher rate than any other age group, yet they face a shortage of mental health 
professionals specializing in their needs.
There are currently 6,000 geriatric social workers in the US but there is a need for 32,600, writes Paul Downey, president of nonprofit Serving Seniors. That need is expected to double when all baby boomers reach age 65, he notes.
