By Scott Darrell, Desert Cities Unit Chair

“Social Workers Stand Up” is the theme for NASW’s work at the federal, state and local levels in 2017. Members of the Desert Cities Unit are Standing Up in support of those who are most vulnerable in our Coachella Valley communities. Planning is already underway for multiple civic actions: Million Women March, Homeless PIT Survey, Hunger Awareness Banquet and California Lobby Days and Social Work Month.

Instead of regularly-scheduled CEU and networking events, small workgroups are forming to plan and implement each of these events. To learn how you can participate, check in regularly with our Facebook Group (search for “Region F NASW Desert Cities- Riverside County”) or email me directly: scott@scottdarrell.com.

Thank you for all that you do to make a better Coachella Valley.

Homeless Point-In-Time Survey:
 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
On Tuesday, January 24th from 5:30 to 9:30 am, Riverside County will conduct the annual Point-In-Time Homeless Count. Last year, this count significantly undercounted how many homeless people live in the Coachella Valley. It is critically important that we receive an accurate count as resources are allocated by the County based on the number of homeless people counted on this day, with most of the surveying completed by community volunteers.

You can sign up at http://www.riversidehomelesscounts.com/.  There will be a training prior to the Count and people will be assigned to teams so that no-one will be working by themselves.
