Contemporary Perspectives on Bioethics-Current Ethical Issues in Healthcare

A Continuing Education Event

All individuals who work with clients coping with bioethical issues, particularly social workers, chaplains, hospice workers, nurses and other healthcare providers are encouraged to attend.

Saturday, September 17th, 2016
8:30am – 4:00pm at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland, CA.

The program will focus on some of the current ethical topics in healthcare specific to California, including issues regarding decision-making for unrepresented, incapacitated patients and physician-assisted dying.

Speakers will include:

  • Margaret McLean, PhD,  Associate Director and Director of Bioethics at the Markkula Center of Applied Bioethics at Santa Clara University
  • Jana Craig, PhD, Regional Ethics Director at Kaiser Permanente-Northern California
  • Ruchika Mishra, PhD, Bioethicist at Sutter Health Bay Area’s CPMC.

And will be followed by:

  • A panel discussion by social workers who participate as members of ethics committees at their respective medical facilities.

 

Objectives:  

At the conclusion of this event, participants will:

  • Have increased knowledge about the End of Life Option Act and its application to ethical and legal considerations for both inpatient and outpatient healthcare settings
  • Be able to apply the recent California court decision regarding decision-making for unrepresented patients, particularly in the skilled nursing settings
  • Be able to determine when health care surrogates should be used for patients lacking capacity, be able to identify ethical issues that may arise, and be able to implement strategies for handling surrogate conflicts
  • Have increased knowledge about the various roles and contributions of social workers on ethics committees in different health care settings

CEUs:

  • This course meets the qualifications for 6 hours of continuing education credit for social workers, including the 6 hours Law & Ethics requirement for licensure, as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.  Provider’s name: NASW-CA.  CA State Board of Behavioral Sciences Approved Provider PCE 44.
  • This course is offered through the Nursing Continuing Education Program of UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland. Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number 00374 for 6 contact hours.  RN CE certificates are issued free of charge for UCSF BCHO employees. Outside RN participants will be required to pay $10 for their certificates.

 

Registration:  Prices range from $130 to $150 and includes lunch.  An early bird discount of $10 will be applied up to and including August 31st.
