Text reads “Social Work Breaks Barriers. March 2023 Social Work Month.”

Join us as we celebrate this year’s Social Work Month theme, “Social Work Breaks Barriers.” We honor this month to highlight how social workers have enriched our society by empowering people and communities to overcome hurdles that prevent them from living life to the fullest.

Social workers have been breaking barriers for generations. The profession can trace part of its origins to Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Star, who in 1889 opened Hull House in Chicago to provide social services to the area. Thanks to the paths paved by such pioneers, social work is now one of the fastest-growing professions in the United States. There were 715,000 social workers in the nation in 2020 and that number is expected to grow to more than 800,000 by the end of this decade.

Throughout March, we recognize and uplift social workers and their life-affirming contributions. From advocacy, leadership, education, and beyond, social workers are on the frontlines of change. NASW-CA is proud to honor and uplift social workers who have continued to push for changes that have made our communities stronger and more resilient, and we invite you to celebrate Social Work Month with us.

NASW Celebrates Social Work Month

Text reads “National Association of Social Workers. Social Work Breaks Barriers.”

National Professional Social Work Month is an opportunity for social workers across the country and their allies to turn the spotlight on the profession and highlight the important contributions they make to society.

The annual Social Work Month campaign in March is a time to inform public, policymakers, and legislators about how social workers have always broken barriers when it comes to the services they provide in an array of sectors, including hospitals and mental health centers, federal, state and local government, schools, community centers, and social service agencies.

People become social workers because they have a strong desire to help others and make society a better place. Social work is one of the fastest growing professions in the United States, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). More than 700,000 professional social workers are hard at work nationwide, but that number is expected to rise to more than 800,000 by 2030, BLS said.
