The publication is based on the
Minnesota Association for Children’s Mental Health’s (MACMH) An Educator’s Guide to Children’s Mental Health. A Guide to Student Mental Health and Wellness in California was developed to help school staff identify and support students who are experiencing emotional distress and equip them with the tools they need to reach all students. It includes sections on common symptoms and behaviors seen in students with mental health disorders, how mental health disorders and medications affect student performance, and how best to form partnerships with parents.
The “California Guide” also includes fact sheets on 15 common mental health disorders seen among children and youth. The fact sheets describe the disorders, list the common symptoms and behaviors, and give appropriate classroom strategies and accommodations.
The guide can be purchased from the MACMH at http://www.macmh.org/books/ for $26.95.
A Guide to Student Mental Health and Wellness in California was produced in collaboration with the California Department of Education, Placer County Office of Education, and the Minnesota Association for Children’s Mental Health. This publication was made possible through funding from the California Mental Health Services Authority (CalMHSA).
