LOS ANGELES, CA – On Saturday November 11 from 9:30am to 2:00pm at the Delancey Street Foundation, the National Association of Social Workers, California Chapter and its local Los Angeles regions (Regions G, H, and I) will host a CEU event on Criminal Justice that will include a breakfast and panel discussion.
The event entitled, “Criminal Justice in Today’s Landscape,” will featured panelists including Shantel Vachani, JD, MSW, Clinical Assistant Professor USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work, Chief Martin Sissac, Fontana Unified School District, MSW candidate, and Mike Farrell, former actor on the show MASH, President of Death Penalty Focus.
Attendees can expect to learn about the relatedness of systems of criminal justice, juvenile justice, and “mass incarceration” policy and programs within the current context of Los Angeles and California, and how various systems currently interact (i.e. parole, education, mental health) around this issue. They will also be able to understand how/why the school to prison pipeline disproportionately impacts youth of color, youth with disabilities, trauma-impacted youth, LGBTQ youth and foster youth, and how restorative and transformative justice work can mitigate this pipeline. Finally, they will become familiar with the work and design of trauma-informed care, prevention of recidivism, and successful re-entry programs.
Founded in 1988, Death Penalty Focus is a non-profit organization dedicated to the abolition of capital punishment through grassroots organizing, research, and the dissemination of information about the death penalty and its alternatives.
The Delancey Street Foundation is located at 400 N. Vermont, Los Angeles, CA 90004. Attendees can opt for a tour of the facility at the end of the event. The cost to attend is $25 for students, $30 for NASW members, and $40 for non-members.
