Antonio Shallowhorn was recently selected as a 2020-2021 Verne LaMarr Lyons Memorial Scholarship Awardee by the NASW Foundation.

Antonio Shallowhorn was raised in Long Beach, California where he developed his passion for education, public health, and racial justice. Having earned his Master of Public Health Degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, MA and his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology with a minor in African American Studies from UCLA, his passions and commitment to serve expanded. While earning his degrees, Antonio worked with high school and college students providing academic and emotional support as an academic advisor and program coordinator. During his first year at UCLA, he interned at Wellnest LA a community mental health agency where he found a passion for working with children and families in their Early Intervention division. Antonio is now a second year MSW student at the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs with a concentration in Social and Economic Justice. Antonio will continue to work with children and families by completing his second year placement with the Los Angeles Department of Children and Family Services where he will help connect families to resources that strengthen family well-being and promote child safety.

The Verne LaMarr Lyons Memorial Scholarship is awarded to master’s degree candidates in social work who demonstrate an interest in or has experience with health/mental health practice and have a commitment to working in African American communities. Previous recipients now work in hospitals, medical clinics, and social services agencies that provide treatment and specialized services to African American patients.

The Lyons Scholarship is supplemented by, and currently is part of, the Social Work HEALS program (along with the Jane B. Aron Doctoral Fellowship), which was funded in 2014 by a generous five-year grant from the New York Community Trust Robert and Ellen Popper Scholarship Fund.
