NASW-CA honors July as Disability Pride Month. Disability Pride Month has been celebrated in July since 1990, when President Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Disability Pride celebrates and honors disabled folks who have been historically unrecognized in mainstream society.
It is also an important time to bring awareness of the ableism the diverse community experiences. The progress for inclusion and accessibility has grown the past 32 years, but there is still much work to be done to ensure that disabled people are seen before their disability. Disabilities, visible or not, are often associated with stigma, barriers, and misinformation. It is crucial to listen and amplify voices from disabled people, challenge stigma around disabilities, and continue to create accessible change. NASW-CA will continue to support inclusive regulation, and will work to ensure that our resources are accessible to disabled folks. #DisabilityPrideMonth
