San Luis Obispo Unit Report

 By L. Jeannette Davis, DSW

To celebrate Social Work Month, the San Luis Obispo u nit will be honoring Shirley Summers, LCSW, as our Social Worker of the Year. Summers epitomizes the field of social work. After moving to San Luis Obispo County in the late 1960s, she received her MSW at University of California, Berkeley, in the early 1990s, joined NASW, and then worked for the Department of Social Services, Department of Corrections [CMC], and ARC therapy as a social worker and supervisor. She also found time to volunteer at the SLO Community Counseling Center and, for the past 10 years, has completed three immersion Spanish courses and attended a Spanish program in Costa Rica. Icing on the cake — both of her children became social workers too.

Please join us for the 40th Anniversary of the California Chapter during Social Work Month. The San Luis Obispo unit will meet on Thursday, March 27, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. We will share dinner, cake and hear from Shirley Summers. To find the place where we hold our meetings, please contact Ly-Lan Lofgren at lylanlofgren@gmail.com. Also, please mark your calendars for the following Thursdays: April 24, May 22 and June 26.
