Will Hillary Clinton Follow Through with Her Promises on Immigration Reform?

By Lizeth Sebastian, Carolina Ramirez, Jesus Limon, Mark Zhang and Esteban Plata

According to the recent USA Today article titled “Clinton Vows to Expand Obama’s Immigration Executive Actions” Hillary expressed her frustration over the Supreme Court’s non-decision that halted president Obama’s immigration executive action. Hillary further promised to implement comprehensive immigration reform within her first 100 days as President (if she’s elected, of course).

As social work students, we applaud Hillary’s support for immigration reform, especially in the midst of strong xenophobic sentiments in the public. In our practices, we regularly encounter undocumented clients facing various problems. Due to their immigration status, it is often difficult for us to find proper resources to assist them. If comprehensive immigration reform is implemented, it will enable our clients to receive the services they are desperately in need of.

Given past failures of immigration reform bills in congress, we’re realistic about Hillary’s power if she becomes the new president. We do not demand immediate success, but it is our hope that she will try her absolute best in following through with her promise.
