What Social Workers Are Thankful For

By Janlee Wong

We’re thankful for programs and services that benefit our clients. We believe in health care for all and we are making progress towards that long elusive goal. Seventy three percent of the states have expanded Medicaid, and the midterm elections have made it hopeful for another six states.  NASW worked hard in those six states to influence the political process.

We’re thankful for social workers who won their elections in the midterms because we believe social workers are ideal policy makers. Some of the social workers elected (All PACE or CALPACE endorsed) include:

U.S. SENATE

Kyrsten Sinema, Arizona

CALIFORNIA SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION

Tony Thurmond (first social worker to win statewide office)

U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

Sylvia Garcia (TX) newly elected

RE-ELECTED IN CALIFORNIA

Barbara Lee

Karen Bass

Susan Davis

LOCAL RACES (Select)

Martha Guerrero, West Sacramento City Council

Rose Muñoz, Santa Barbara Unified School Board

We’re thankful for passage of Proposition 2 on the CA ballot that will generate $2 billion to help the homeless with housing and as important, supportive services.

We’re thankful for a fire disaster fund that NASW set up to help social workers who have been adversely impacted for the California wildfires.

And we’re thankful for friends and family, colleagues and our communities for their support in our professional work as social workers.
