Webinar: Ethical Challenges Working with Children, Families and Schools

This webinar will provide participants with an overview of complex ethical issues pertaining to social work with children, families, and schools.  

Participants will learn how to identify ethical dilemmas, protect clients, prevent professional malpractice, and avoid liability. Emphasis will be on practical strategies designed to protect children, families, professionals, and employers.  

Key topics will include the nature of minors’ right to privacy and confidentiality; limits to minors’ right to privacy and confidentiality; informed consent; boundary issues and dual relationships; conflicts of interest; social workers’ and clients’ use of social media and digital technology; and documentation.  The webinar will include extensive case material and discussion of relevant ethical standards, statutes, regulations, and court decisions.

At the conclusion of this Webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify common ethical dilemmas pertaining to social work with children, families, and schools
  2. Apply ethical decision-making frameworks and protocols
  3. Identify relevant ethical standards
  4. Identify ethical issues that pose malpractice and liability risks
  5. Design strategies to prevent ethics complaints and lawsuits
  6. Prevent violation of ethical standards in the delivery of services to children and families
  7. Identify ethical dilemmas related to minors’ confidentiality rights, boundaries, dual relationships, conflicts of interest, informed consent, use of social media and digital technology, and documentation
  8. Conduct an audit of their ethics-related policies and procedures
  9. Identify ethics-related policies and procedures that warrant revision and modification
