Sin Fronteras: Cross-Cultural Immersion in Mexico

Friends and Colleagues:

As many of you know, Sin Fronteras is a cross-cultural immersion in Oaxaca, Mexico
organized by the University of California Berkeley, School of Social Welfare.

Through continuous cross-cultural immersion, Latino and non-Latino social work students will build their language skills, study culturally informed and derived engagement and intervention practices, and practice behaviors relevant to preparation for providing social welfare services to Latino clients. Ultimately, social work students will gain a transnational perspective that will shape their approach to providing services to Latino communities in the U.S. The course includes lectures given by local academics, mental health professionals, community members and indigenous healers; language instruction; field placement/service learning; and an integration seminar. For more information about Sin Fronteras (formerly known as Intercambio) please go to https://swsinfronteras.wordpress.com

I’m writing today to let you know that our students this year have taken an active role in fundraising to support the program. Berkeley Social Welfare students will be reaching out to their networks to request support for the Sin Fronteras program which helps 15 social welfare graduate students enrich their education through this six-week international opportunity in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Should you wish to give to support Sin Fronteras, please go to http://socialwelfare.berkeley.edu/sin-fronteras

You can support our students by sharing this information with others in your network that support training that supports the provision of culturally and linguistically appropriate mental health services to Latinos in California.

Thank you for your support.

Saludos,
Luna Calderon, LCSW
