Report: LGBT Americans More Likely to Live in Poverty

A report the Movement Advancement Project and other groups released recently concludes LGBT Americans are  more likely to live in poverty because of discrimination and anti-LGBT attitudes.

The report cites a 2012 Gallup survey that found 20.7 percent of LGBT people earn less than $12,000 a year, compared to only 17 percent of heterosexuals. It also notes 15 percent of transgender Americans earn less than $10,000 a year, compared to only 4 percent of the general population. The report notes the annual income of households of gay couples with children who live in states without same-sex marriage is on average $8,912 less than those of opposite-sex couples and their children. This gap narrows to only $689 in states where gays and lesbians are able to legally marry.
