New Addition to the NASW-CA Annual Conference Program

Julia Weber, JD, MSW, will present a workshop entitled, “Gun Violence Prevention: The Role of Mental Health Providers and Gun Violence Restraining Orders,” during the first group of workshop sessions (10:45-12:15) at the NASW-CA annual conference on November 2 at the San Mateo Marriott.

The role firearms play in mass casualties, suicide, and domestic violence has received increased attention in recent years. Professionals working with people in crisis have a variety of tools available, but the complexity of the options can make it difficult to identify the best way to decrease risk. This session will explain the Gun Violence Restraining Order (aka California’s “red flag” law) which offers one relatively recent approach. It will also cover prohibitions in domestic violence matters and Welfare and Institutions Code section 5150 and the critical role mental health providers can play in promoting safety and managing confidentiality concerns.

Julia is an expert on domestic violence policy who has spent her career working to develop promising practices to prevent and respond to violence. Prior to joining Giffords Law Center, Julia worked for over 17 years with the Judicial Council of California’s Center for Families, Children & the Courts, where she served as co-counsel to the Family and Juvenile Law Advisory Committee and supervised the Access to Justice Unit. She attended Washington University School of Law and the George Warren Brown School of Social Work, is a trained mediator, and a member of the California bar. Julia also serves as an expert witness and is an adjunct professor at Golden Gate School of Law, where she teaches domestic violence law.

Registration deadline is October 18.

Registration discounts are offered to NASW members, social work students, retired social workers, early registrants, and volunteers who serve as classroom monitors. Discounted hotel rates available to conference attendees.
