NASW-CA Advocates Against AB 1314 (Essayli): Gender Identity: Parental Notification

Text reads “NASW-CA Advocates Against AB 1314 (Essayli): Gender Identity: Parental Notification”

NASW-CA would like to thank Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi, Chair of the Assembly Education Committee, for refusing to schedule a hearing for AB 1314 (Essayli) – Gender Identity: Parental Notification. This dangerous bill would require school staff, including school social workers, to “out” a student within three days if the student is identifying with a gender other than the child’s assigned sex at birth.

This outrageous bill could set up a potentially explosive dynamic in the student’s home since not all families are accepting of their children who are changing or questioning their gender. This could result in mental health issues and at school, could set up the student for bullying and hate.

According the Muratsuchi, the Chair of the Assembly Education Committee, “… I will not be setting AB 1314 for a hearing, not only because the bill is proposing bad policy, but also because a hearing would potentially provide a forum for increasingly hateful rhetoric targeting LGBTQ youth.”

NASW-CA advocated against this measure and is committed to protecting student from harm.
