DisAbilities Council: Serving Neurodiverse Individuals as Professional Social Workers (2 CEUs) on April 15

This workshop will focus on best practices to use when serving neurodiverse individuals as professional social workers. The effects of racial injustice, equity, and access to support services will be discussed as well as how social workers are addressing these disparities. The presenters will share their personal and professional experiences with neurodiverse individuals, and participants will learn interventions to use with clients and communities they serve.

Learning objectives:

  • Participants will be able to describe the current research on the disparities faced by neurodiverse individuals.
  • Participants will be able to translate this knowledge into an understanding of the challenges faced by neurodiverse individuals, their families, and communities.
  • Participants will examine and learn about services that can be utilized to support neurodiverse individuals and address issues such as inclusion, equity and access to support services for neurodiverse individuals.
  • Participants will learn specific techniques and interventions they can utilize to support neurodiverse individuals.
  • Participants will be introduced to techniques for advocating for the inclusion and support of neurodiverse individuals.

About the Presenters

Dr. Debra Waters-Roman currently serves as an Associate Clinical Professor at the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work. Prior to joining USC, Dr. Waters-Roman was employed with the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services for over 30 years. Dr. Waters-Roman’ most recent position at DCFS was as an Intern Field Coordinator. In this position Dr. Waters-Roman was responsible for overseeing the placement and supervision of MSW students at DCFS. Dr. Waters-Roman has trained extensively on a variety of topics related to the field of public child welfare. In her current position at USC, Dr. Waters-Roman works with students placed in both the CalSWEC and the University Consortium for Children programs. In addition, as both a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Waters-Roman provides a variety of mental health services to at risk children and their families. Dr. Waters-Roman specializes in treating trauma survivors, as well as special needs children and their families. 

Tina Paddock, LCSW is a Clinical Associate Professor at the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work. Prior to USC, Tina was a program specialist at the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services. She has also provided mental health services to children and families involved in public child welfare and with special needs. Tina also has an interest working with neurodiverse children and adults. She was the Wellness Program Manager for South Central Los Angeles Regional Center and sits on the Autism Committee for USC. In 2007, Ms. Paddock was appointed to the Los Angeles County Commission for Child and Families by the Board of Supervisors and chaired the Childhood Wellness Committee. Recently, she sat on the NASW-CA Chapter Board as Vice-President of Membership. Tina is also pursuing her Doctor in Policy, Planning, and Program Development at the USC Sol Price School of Public Policy and is interested in the integration of micro and macro practice.

CEU Provider Statement: Course meets the qualifications for 2 hours of continuing education credit for MFTs, LPCCs, LEPs and/or LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences, provided by NASW-CA.

NASW-CA Refund Policy: To receive a refund, requests must be emailed to naswca@socialworkers.org at least one (1) week prior to the event date. No refunds granted after the event, no exceptions. This policy also applies to group registrants. The refund for group registrations will go directly to the original payer of the registration fee. Refunds may take up to 10 days to process. If attendees pay with a credit card, the refund will be made to the same card. If attendees pay with a check, the refund will be made by check to the person or organization that originally paid for the registration.
