NASW-CA announces their annual state award winners

SACRAMENTO, CA – NASW-CA has announced the 2021 award winners for their annual state awards that will be presented at their virtual conference on Saturday, October 16th.

This year’s Social Worker of the Year, Siouxsie Calderon, ASW, is a Los Angeles native, who has practiced social work in the micro, mezzo and macro arenas for over 20 years. Her background in health and human services, combined with her social work practice, has afforded her the ability to help build bridges for diverse groups to communities and agencies across the LA County Service Planning Areas. She has worked on an array of service delivery programs, direct services, and with social policy level consortiums. She has also served as a lecturer for public (CSULA & CSUN) and private schools (Azusa Pacific) of social work for the last 12 years. On a micro level, she practiced as an Associated Clinical Social Worker for six years with Casa Cardenas Senior and Family Counseling Center and today she is continuing to accrue her clinical hours with the Kaiser Educational & Outreach Program in Baldwin Park and El Centro de Ayuda in Boyle Heights.  

 The Lifetime Achievement awardee is Beckie Masaki, MSW, who has worked in the field to end gender-­based violence for over 30 years. In 1988, she cofounded one of the first programs in the nation that could meet the language and cultural needs of Asian survivors of domestic violence and trafficking, Asian Women’s Shelter (AWS) in San Francisco, and served as the founding executive director for over twenty-­one years. Ms. Masaki has been a co-­founder and staff of a national cultural resource center, Asian Pacific Institute on Gender­ Based Violence. She has been a co-­founder and staff of a national cultural resource center, Asian Pacific Institute on Gender­ Based Violence.

Pastor Dan Broyles, LMFT, is being honored with Community Member of the Year Award. He is a care pastor at Valencia Hills Community Church and has been working at churches since 2002. Previously, he worked for the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services. Mr. Broyles has a M.S. in Marriage and Family Therapy from California State University at Northridge. In addition, he has received a B.S. in Biblical Studies and a B.S. in Human/Family Development from Grace University in Omaha, Nebraska. In 2019 he was the recipient of the “Kathryn Barger Commitment to Service Award (Los Angeles County).”

NASW-CA will present the Organization of the Year award to Brandman Centers for Senior Care, a Program of All-Inclusive care for the Elderly, or PACE, located in the San Fernando Valley.
