New ICD Code Changes: Avoid Reimbursement Denials

Each year, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) releases new, updated, or deleted codes for the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Edition, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM). Updates to the mental and behavioral section of the ICD-10-CM began October 1, 2017. Most of the changes are in the area of substance use. Clinical social workers should use the new codes when submitting claims for reimbursement to avoid reimbursement denials.
