Dr. Josef Ruzek to Present Skills for Psychological Recovery (SPR) Training

Dr. Josef Ruzek, specialist in early intervention for trauma survivors who has been active in development and evaluation of early preventive interventions for disaster and terrorism survivors, returning Iraq War personnel, and patients seen in hospital trauma centers, will present at the NASW-CA Annual Conference on Friday, October 26.

His workshop is titled: Skills for Psychological Recovery (SPR) Training and will take place from 10:30am – 5:30pm.

The class is limited to 40 participants.

This one-day workshop will enable participants to deliver three core skills for promoting the wellbeing and recovery of individuals affected by disasters and other recent trauma.  These skills form part of the larger manualized approach to crisis counseling called Skills for Psychological Recovery (SPR).  Skills covered will include strengthening the social connections of disaster survivors, increasing their participation in meaningful positive activities, and systematic problem-solving. Also discussed will be the process of information gathering to inform selection of skills and the use of the MySonomaStrong internet tool to assist survivors.

Dr. Ruzek retired as Director of the VA National Center for PTSD Dissemination and Training Division in April 2018, after helping improve PTSD services in VA for over 26 years.  Dr. Ruzek is an Adjunct Professor at Stanford University Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Co-Director of the Center for m2 Health at Palo Alto University. Dr. Ruzek specializes in early intervention for trauma survivors and has been active in development and evaluation of early preventive interventions for disaster and terrorism survivors, returning Iraq War personnel, and patients seen in hospital trauma centers.  He is co-chair of the Early Intervention special interest group of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, where he served on the Board of Directors for 6 years.
