The Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS) officially ended on December 31, 2016. MACRA is the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS’s) new Quality Payment Program, which is replacing PQRS. Beginning in 2019, clinical social workers who are Medicare providers will have three options to participate in MACRA: low volume threshold, virtual groups, and individual or group reporting.
In 2018, clinical social workers may participate in MACRA to practice reporting measures, but will not receive credit for doing so. 2017 has been a transition year allowing clinical social workers and other providers to have a reprieve from reporting measures after 10 years of doing so for PQRS.
