2023 NASW-CA’s CNLI Nominations Are Now Open

Guide the NASW California Chapter with Your Skills and Expertise

The 2023 NASW-CA election nominations are officially open, and we encourage NASW-CA Members to nominate themselves or others for an open position within our leadership! Nominations are the first step in our elections process, where interested social work professionals and students share their interest in running for a role with our Committee on Nominations & Leadership Identification.

NASW is member driven through a democratically elected Board of Directors. Candidates for the elected positions are nominated by the democratically elected Committee on Nominations and Leadership Identification (CNLI).

Serving as an elected leader of NASW allows a social worker to give back to the profession and includes valuable training, experience, and networking opportunities. Terms start July 1, 2023. Unless otherwise noted, the positions are 3 year terms. Nominations are due December 31, 2022.

Consider nominating others or yourself to run for an elected position! Nominees must be NASW members.

Open Elected Positions with NASW-CA

President-Elect (1 Year Term)

The President-Elect will work closely with the President in learning role and responsibilities to ensure continuity and fills in as needed. The President-Elect will become President after their one-year term.

As a President-Elect, you will:

  • Participate in the meetings of the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee
  • Remain available to work in close collaboration with the President on association related activities
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors or by the President
  • Serve as the BOD President for a three-year term following service as President-Elect

Secretary

The Secretary is responsible for the minutes of the meetings of the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee, as well as for the non-fiscal records of the Chapter.

As a Secretary, you will:

  • Take minutes at each Board of Directors and Executive Committee meetings
  • Record and maintain non-fiscal records of the Chapter

Member-At-Large Legislative & Political Affairs

The Member-At-Large Legislative & Political Affairs support the chapter’s legislative issues and advocacy efforts. Nominees should highly honor social work core values and will keep these values in mind when assisting the Director of Government Relations and Political Affairs.

As a Member-At-Large Legislative & Political Affairs, you will:

  • Remain knowledgeable of the chapter legislative and political activities
  • Provide consultation to the related staff person, generally the Director of Government Relations and Political Affairs
  • Provide an effective communications link between the Board of Directors and relative program staff
  • Identify opportunities for growth and provide thought leadership to relative program staff to inform strategic solutions
  • Help lead the Legislative Committee

Member-At-Large Membership & Organizational Services

The Member-At-Large Membership & Organizational Services support the chapter’s membership, expand our membership base, ensure the diversity of our professional association, and enhance services to NASW-CA members.

As a Member-At-Large Membership & Organizational Services, you will:

  • Remain knowledgeable of the chapter membership and organizational activities
  • Provide consultation to the related staff person, generally the Director of Membership and Communications
  • Provide an effective communications link between the Board of Directors and relative program staff
  • Identify opportunities for growth and provide thought leadership to relative program staff to inform strategic solutions
  • Help lead the Membership Committee

Regional Directors: Region C, Region E, Region G

We are seeking Regional Directors for Regions C, E, and G.

Regional Directors are the chapter’s local liaisons who help drive the chapter’s advocacy and training efforts, and support social worker needs in that region. Regional Directors have a seat at our Board of Directors table, voting privileges, and are thought leaders to drive state-level change.

As a Regional Director, you will:

  • Serve on the Chapter Board of Directors to represent the Region in the decision-making processes of the Chapter
  • Is responsible for the convening of at least two regional events each year that represent the interests as they relate to areas involved
  • Appoint regional and unit leaders as needed to implement successful programming
  • Collaborate with Director of Membership and Communications to work to ensure regional activities are consistent with the priorities. policies and operating procedures of the Chapter Board of Directors and the National Association of Social Workers
  • Work with Director of Membership and Communications to ensure effective communication between the Chapter Board of Directors and membership in the Region and communication from the Region and sub-units to the Board of Directors
  • Commit to securing maximum possible membership participation in the decision-making and program activities of the Region
  • Pursue, wherever feasible, opportunities for joint programming and activities with contiguous Regions
  • Is an active proponent of NASW membership and an ambassador for member recruitment and retention

Committee on Nominations & Leadership Identification (CNLI) Chair (2 Year Term)

We are seeking a Committee on Nominations & Leadership Identification Chair.

CNLI Chair will preside at all CNLI meetings and work closely with the chapter staff.

As a Committee on Nominations & Leadership Identification Chair, you will:

  • Develop meeting agendas, correspondence, and materials in consultation with members and staff
  • Orient newly elected members of the CNLI prior to the start of nominations and election cycle
  • Initially review matters brought to the CNLI’s attention and involves the CNLI members as warranted
  • Ensure that all assigned tasks are performed in a timely, efficient manner

Committee on Nominations & Leadership Identification (CNLI) Member: Region A, C, F (2 Year Term)

We are seeking a Committee on Nominations & Leadership Identification Committee Member for Region F.

Committee Members are the decision-making voice to nominate potential leaders to serve in state-level leadership roles. Nominees should have strong ties in their local social work communities and will help to identify Social Workers to help lead the NASW-CA chapter.

As a Committee on Nominations & Leadership Identification Chair, you will:

  • Select at least two candidates for each position in the regular election of Chapter Board members, CNLI members, and Delegates as stated in the Chapter Charter
  • Certify a completed ballot to the Chapter Board of Directors
  • Review nominations delivered through petitions
  • Adopts relative operating procedures and make such recommendations to the Board as to assure the systematic and equitable conduct of the election process

Student Directors: North MSW, South BSW (1 year term)

We are seeking a MSW candidate in Northern CA and a BSW in Southern CA. Central CA students can apply for either role. The dividing line for North/South is Bakersfield CA, with students located north of Bakersfield eligible to apply for the Student Director North role.

Student Directors are the chapter’s liaisons to the student body to ensure student voices are reflected in the direction of the chapter’s advocacy, trainings, and supports. Student Directors have a seat at our Board of Directors table and are our thought leaders to drive state-level change.

As a Student Director, you will:

  • Attend regular meetings of the Board of Directors and participates as a full member of the Board, including but not limited to, representing student interests and perspectives during Board deliberations
  • Establish contact with accredited schools of social work and encourages, or helps them to select an NASW student liaison in each school
  • Work with Chapter Staff to coordinate association representation at student events
  • Maintain contact with student liaisons, and works to identify students to recommend for committee appointments and future leadership positions with the chapter
